"Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular" - Aristotle

The Poetry Corner

What does it mean to be human? Who are we? Why are we here? How does the individual fit in? These are questions that have been asked and answered throughout history by an uncountable number of people and in uncountable ways. To be in conversation with one’s self about these questions is a meaningful, healthy, important part of being human. To be in conversation with one’s community about these questions is the soul's deepest desire of belonging.

In his essay on Poetry, Emerson says that a poet represents humanity and that the poet is a ‘Man of Beauty’ since the poet acknowledges the interdependence between the material and spiritual worlds. Emerson says that the poet is more close to nature and unlike many of us who stay away from nature, a poet can feel and understand and explore and expose the hidden secrets of nature. Emerson says that poetry is not something that was found some time back, but for ages ago, poets did exist and a poem could bring out the time that the poet existed. That is the strength of poetry.

Welcome to the Poetry Corner… Our hope is to enliven the conversation that we are all having (whether we know it or not)  Who am I/why am I here?

There are a few ways to participate.

  1. Utilize the pens and paper to write a poem about what you see, feel, hear, or any thoughts that come to your head. What is a poem you may ask? As our passionate forefather, Emerson might put it a poem is anything that challenges you to be honest, to forgo pure reason and allow yourself to name the word at this moment for this time.

  2. If you feel called to join in on the performance in any way please bow come to the side bow two the four directs, check in with yourself that your heart is open, set an intention for yourself and a desire you have for your community and wait for humanity until we acknowledge you. We will do our best to invite you in, yet if we are in the middle of something, feel a tremendous amount of inspiration, or if there are too many others already participating it might take us some time to invite you in.

  3. Start a conversation with someone you know or don’t know about what you are seeing/ experiencing. You can talk about how it makes you feel, how it relates to something personal you have experience or are going through.
