Why Hope?

"I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death."

-Robert Fulghum

Why do I do anything? This is not a hyperbolic question, but a fundamental human question that its contemplation has significant consequences such as the other big questions: who am I, where do I come from, what is my purpose, and what happens when I die?

This mime tour which I am dedicating to the notion of hope is for me a way to wholistically contemplate hope. My hypothesis is that much of what I would consider my altruistic thoughts and actions stem from hope.

I believe hope is at the center of peace, of community, liberation, equality, resilience, creativity, and love.

My mission through this work is to experience hope, to spread hope, and to inspire hope in the people and communities I visit.

My intention is best summed up by the Irish playwright Goerge Bernard Shaw:

“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. Life is no ‘brief candle’ to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for a moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to the future generations.”
